What's New at Shaw Public Library

So many things are going to be happening this coming year, it's hard to know where to start.

First with programming, from Linda Wohlforth:  We are getting everything in motion to begin our programming for the school year.  We will be having Story times at the Library for preschoolers on the second and fourth Friday of the month at 10:30AM to 11:15AM through to the end of May.  There will be all sorts of fun and learning activities for the children during these times.

Our Homeschoolers will be back attending our monthly classes throughout the year.  The children will be working on themed projects and continuing to develop their computer skills.

We are always open to suggestions for programming for children and adults.  We hope to be able to have some special programs this fall.  It’s not too early to let us know what program you would like to see for our Summer Let’s Talk About It Reading Discussion program.  We have to submit a grant application to the Maine Humanities Council by January.  We had a great time at our Author Tea this summer, in collaboration with the Moosehead Historical Society.  We hope to be able to have another one next summer.  If you have any suggestions for new authors, please let us know.  Please call with any requests.

Regarding Interlibrary Loans, from Russ Gagnon:  Interlibrary Loan (ILL) is a service provided by the Shaw Public Library in conjunction with the Maine State Library System.  Books not available locally may be requested through the Shaw Public Library at participating libraries in Maine and throughout the U.S.

We are getting closer to changing our Circulation/Cataloging Program to an Open Source, online program called Evergreen.  We are working with nine surrounding libraries in a Consortium.  We will all have our collections housed on a server, enabling our patrons to view what is available in our area.  Our patrons will be able to see what we have, request materials online, renew materials online, and see what they have out on their patron accounts.  Anything wanted through another library will have to be handled through our library through ILL.  This is going to be very new to all of us, so it may take us a little while to become familiar with it, but we hope to have everyone up and running by the end of this year.

Trustees, the Town Manager, Library Association, and the Staff, have been working together to see if it will be possible to renovate, expand (in the small area behind the library), and fix our water problems.  We have been working with an Engineering Firm, and Ken Woodbury, from the PCEDC, to see what would be available for this project.  The project is being developed, and we hope, with the approval of the Selectmen, and the Town, to be able to move ahead.  Working with the results of the survey we had a couple of years ago, 83% of those responding wanted to stay in this building, so we are trying to make this happen.  Please contact us with questions, or suggestions.  Our project’s name is “Vision 2020, Our Next Chapter”, and we hope that our library will be able to continue to be a place that is welcoming to everyone in our community and surrounding areas.

A new service to our library, developed by Father Rob Reagan, Chair of the Board of Trustees, with a representative from the Small Business Administration out of Augusta, is a collection of publications and information, along with telephone and internet help, and internet based courses through the SBA, being made available at the Shaw Public Library.  Father Rob felt that with the state of the economy, this information could be very helpful to those “micro businesses”, that are full time, part time, or seasonal. Please contact us if we may be of help, or feel free to stop by the library and look at what we have.

Please stop by the library, see what new materials we have, see our two new patron computers (purchased through a Grant from the Gates Foundation), and give us any suggestions for materials you would like to see at your library.
