Greenville Town Manager John Simko knows the frustration of trying to peer around high snowbanks to see oncoming traffic. "I was leaving my house last week, and I almost hit a town plow truck," said Simko. "So I understand the frustration." But Simko urges to public to be patient as town crews try to clean up the onslaught of snow that has piled up on roadsides, parking areas and at the end of some streets. "We have had more snow this winter than we've has in probably the last 12 to 15 years," said Simko. Compounding the problem is the lack of a significant "break" between storms to allow some of the snow to melt. "You just take a breather, and we're back out of the road within a day or two," said the town manager. Picking up snow and hauling it away isn't a viable option, unless it's a major thoroughfare like Pritham Avenue, said Simko. "When we do clean it up from the median, we have to use the whole town crew, two flaggers and sometimes even a statte (Department of Transportation) truck." Also, Simko said, there are strict regulations on where snow can be legally dumped. The town manager did say that many townspeople are satisfied with winter road maintenance and snow removal, including some fuel oil dealers. "They said they were very impressed with the job we did," said Simko. For those keeping track, spring is only nine days away - on the calendar, anyhow.
