Rep. Pete Johnson Honors Piscataquis County Legislative Scholarship Recipient Hannah Breton
Tuesday, April 08, 2008
AUGUSTA - The Maine Legislature honored this year's recipients of the Legislative Memorial Scholarships during a ceremony at the State House on March 28.

State Rep. Pete Johnson (R-Greenville) said he was privileged to recognize Hannah Breton, of Greenville, as the Piscataquis County $1,000 scholarship winner.

The Legislative Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 1995 in memory of all those who have served the Maine Legislature. The $1,000 scholarships are awarded each spring to one student from each of Maine's 16 counties. Awards are made to Maine residents attending Maine institutions of higher education based on academic standing and need. Hannah Breton graduated from Greenville High School in 2007. She is completing her freshman year at the University of Maine at Orono as a civil engineering major. She is a dean's list student and plays on the women's varsity soccer team.

Scholarship recipients and their families spent Friday morning meeting with legislators and auction committee members. After a coffee reception, they proceeded to the House of Representatives chamber to receive their award certificates and then were presented the award checks in the Senate chamber. Miss Breton was accompanied by her parents, Paul and Melanie Breton. All funds for the scholarship have been raised through an annual auction held in Augusta.

Legislators, staff and lobbyists participate in the event by soliciting and making donations, organizing and even "auctioneering." The 2008 auction held last month raised more than $25,000.

Applications for next year's Legislative Memorial Scholarship are due by April 18, 2008 and are available online at www.mesfoundation.com. Awards will be made directly to the applicant after successful completion of the first semester of school. Scholarship winners for the 2008 application period will be announced in the spring of 2009.
