By Diana Bowley of the News Staff - GREENVILLE - A local resident asked selectmen Wednesday to consider allowing the lights to remain on at the town's recreational facilities until 11 p.m. during summer months. Selectmen agreed to ask for a recommendation from the town's recreation director. Lighting the basketball court, tennis court and the skate park gives youngsters something productive to do rather than walking the streets or hanging out on the street corner, Bruce Reed told selectmen Wednesday. The town's decision to turn the lights off at 9 p.m. because of vandalism at the nearby Greenville schools penalizes those who respect the property, according to Reed. He said youngsters have limited recreational opportunities in town, especially at night. "These recreational facilities are one of the best things that's happened for kids in the town," Reed said. Reed said his concern is that by limiting constructive activities, vandalism will increase not only at the school but also in town. "Vandalism has been a problem for as long as I can remember, so to attribute it to the recreational facilities is not entirely accurate," he said. A solution Reed offered selectmen was to get the youngsters who want the lights on involved to help positively influence those causing the problems. |
