Former language teacher hired as Greenville schools principal

GREENVILLE - A Greenville native has been hired by the Greenville School Committee to serve as principal of kindergarten through grade 12.

Rebecca Brown, who has served as language teacher at Greenville High School since 1996 and has been dean of students for the past three years, was selected during a special board meeting on Tuesday evening.

"I feel good about her being in that position," interim superintendent Steve Pound said

Wednesday. "Personally, I think she's going to make a wonderful principal for us."

Brown is a graduate of Greenville High School, Bowdoin College and holds a master of education degree from Harvard. She will receive a salary of $60,000.

Pound, who resigned from his position in June but agreed to serve as interim superintendent free of charge until a new superintendent is on board, said Brown will be open-minded to ideas and will work well with the staff to move the schools forward.

Much progress on improving the schools has been made in recent weeks, according to Pound.

New windows are being installed in the high school to replace the 70-year-old windows. Board members earlier approved the expenditure of about $79,000 for the replacements. The funds for the project will be taken from a reserve account and the Louis Oakes account.

Pound, whose replacement is expected to be announced at a special Union 60 board meeting on Thursday, said the new vinyl-clad windows should result in a 20 percent to 30 percent savings in energy costs.

In addition, new stalls in the restrooms and new lockers have been installed, Pound said. He said some painting will be done and work will begin to refurbish the gymnasium.
