GREENVILLE - Attention, runners, walkers, adults, children, and babies in strollers! The first annual "Moose on the Run" 5 kilometer road race and 1 kilometer "Fun Run" will be held on Sunday, October 13 in Greenville. The main event sponsor is the United-Kingfield Bank, for which the event is named. Other major sponsors include Indian Hill Trading Post, Garelick Farms, Century 21 – Muzzy Real Estate, WDME-FM, Hammond Lumber & Maine Pine Log Homes, The Moosehead Messenger, the Greenville Schools, the Moosehead Lake Region Chamber of Commerce, and the Town of Greenville. The race is an event that community organizers would like to see happen annually, to promote physical activity, to draw people to the Moosehead Lake Region, and to create an opportunity to just have fun! The race will start and finish at the Greenville High School Gymnasium, located at 144 Pritham Avenue in Greenville. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Gymnasium. There is a $10.00 fee to race, whether one registers early or on the day of the race. There is a $5.00 fee to race in the 1K "Fun Run", which is for youth ages 12 and under. A free long-sleeved shirt will be given out to the first 100 runners to register. The 5 K race starts at 10:00 a.m. and the 1 K "Fun Run" starts at 9:30 a.m. The measured 5 K course is mostly pavement, some dirt trails, and roads with a few rolling hills, but otherwise, a flat, fast course. Runners will pass along Moosehead Lake to catch the view and a possible gust of wind. Awards will be given to first, second and third place for first men and women to cross the line, as well as first, second and third place in listed age categories. A "Mean Runner" award will be given (runner which finishes in the mathematical middle of the pack), as well as ones for "Most Flannel", and "Most Blaze Orange" worn by a runner or walker who participates. Bib prizes donated by local businesses will be distributed at the end of the race. Registration proceeds will be split between the student groups. Assisting in the race route set-up and breakdown, and the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife for the purchase of their new multi-jurisdictional search & rescue patrol boat for Moosehead Lake. "This one-of-a-kind race event will be a great opportunity for whole families to participate in a fun and healthy outdoor event on the shore of Moosehead Lake", said Greenville Town Manager John Simko. "And considering that the race starts at the end of the Moose Hunt, you'll love how we mark the course and how the Game Warden Service will begin the race for us" Simko added.
