Shaw Library seeks funds to rebuild front entrance
Wednesday, September 18, 2002
By MIKE LANGE - GREENVILLE - One of the nice features about the Shaw Public Library in Greenville is that the front door faces scenic Moosehead Lake.

Unfortunately, the wind that comes along with the view has caused problems with the front entrance door during the past year. "Two people have been slightly injured when the high winds literally took the door out of their hands," said Library Trustee Vern Smith.

So the trustees have closed the front entrance and restricted entry to the side door on Pleasant Street. But that poses another problem, said Smith. "Patrons can't use the night drop-off and that's inconvenient," said the trustee.

The solution is to build a glass-encased vestibule on the front entrance with a door on the side that opens toward the building. That way, the winds off Moosehead Lake shouldn't yank the door out of a patron's grasp, said Smith. "We're looking at a design similar to the front entrance at the old bank building across the street, but with the door on the side," he explained.

But any solution has a price tag and the new entry-way could cost up to $10,000. Since there's no money in the budget for such a project and the next annual town meeting is nine months away, the Library Trustees are hoping that the public will help out with donations. "We'd really like to get this finished before snow flies because that's when the problems start," said Smith. Contributions can be sent to Shaw Public Library, P.O. Box 510, Greenville 04441.
