By Johnathan Pratt - GREENVILLE - Board of Selectman Carroll Smith passes away last week after a battle with cancer. He was 56 at the time of his passing. Smith was born and raised in Greenville, graduating from Greenville High School in 1969. After high school, he attended Husson and then the University of Maine at Machias. He was active in sports during his time in college. While attending UMM, Smith met his wife Fonda. He graduated in 1973 and taught in East Machias for four years. He continued his work in eduation in Greenville, followed by a two-year stint in Howland. He retired from the Howland school district in 1999 after serving as both principal and the school's athletic director. Smith ran a successful campaign for Greenville Board of Selectmen in 2004, and was serving his second term after being re-elected lsat summer. Smith was known for his love of sports, including his fondness for the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Giants football team, and college basketball legend Bobby Knight. He passed time by playing card games with friends and family. Smith was predeceased by his son, Jerry, who perished during a training flight in the U.S. Navy this past August. Smith's funeral is scheduled for Wednesday, September 19 at 3:00 p.m. at the Holy Family Catholic Church in Greenville. By order of the Governer, flags throughout Greenville will be flown at half staff that day. Note: Greenville Town Office and Greenville Schools will be closing at 1:00 p.m. on September 19.
