Voting is one of the fundamental rights that we hold as citizens of this state and country. In my opinion, everyone should make an effort to cast a ballot at each election. A recent change in Maine law makes it even easier to cast an absentee ballot. Maine law now allows for `no reason' absentee ballots. You don't have to be out-of-town or have any other reason to take advantage of this easy way to vote at a time that is most convenient to you. Maine has a long history of providing our citizens with exceptional ballot access. We have allowed same day voter registration for over 25 years and this is one of the many reasons for our high voter turn out. During the last legislative session, the Maine Legislature provided the people of Maine with the ability to obtain 'no reason" absentee ballots. Now, voters do not have to be out-of-town or have any other reason to take advantage of this easy way to vote at a time that is most convenient to them. Any registered voter may obtain and cast an absentee ballot. No specific reason must be given to receive and cast an absentee ballot. Voters may contact their local municipal clerk by mail or telephone to request an application for an absentee ballot. An individual may also vote absentee in person at the clerk's office. Absentee ballots are available now and through Election Day. Those individuals who wish to vote absentee, but who are not currently registered in their municipality, may also contact their municipal clerk to register absentee when requesting an absentee ballot. Maine law also allows an immediate family member to obtain an absentee ballot on the voter's behalf by making a request in writing. Ballots that are obtained in this manner do not require witnesses, unless the voter received assistance when marking the ballot. Anyone who wants to make a request by mail should do so as soon as possible to insure the timely receipt and return of the absentee ballot. The clerk must receive completed absentee ballots before 8:00 PM on Election Day, November 6, 2001. Maine law also allows individuals to register to vote right up to and including Election Day. Registration during the nine business days before the election must be completed in person at the registrar's office. Please feel free to contact your local clerk or me if you have any additional questions. I can be reached at 695-2604, or by E-mail at sljones@moosehead.net. Make sure you have a voice in your future. Cast a ballot November 6, 2001! |
