"Recipes, Remedies, Repairs, 1763-1986"
Wednesday, October 29, 2003
Just in time for holiday shopping, the Moosehead Historical Museum has published a cookbook of antiquarian recipes from its vast collection of cookbooks. Titled "Recipes, Remedies, Repairs, 1763-1986", the 5.5 x 8.5 book features a wide array of homemakers hints from years gone by, and is priced at only $5.95.

Does "Old Time Molasses Bread" or "Moosehead Chowder" sound good for supper on a cold night? If you have a large group visiting during the holidays, there's even a receipe for making 200 biscuits at one time! The cookbook was compiled by museum docents, who gathered the information from cookbooks in the museum's collections dating from the 1700s.

In addition to recipes, the book contains a number of "old time" beauty aids, suggested remedies for various illnesses and injuries, and housekeeping aids. As example of the latter, a 1928 suggestion for cooling the house on a hot day was as follows: "... hang netting over each open window and rest the bottom of the netting in a pan of cold water; the water is drawn up into the netting and evaporates, thus cooling the air."

As with all of the recipes, suggested cures and other hints, the book notes that some are out of date, but nevertheless interesting reading.

The book is priced at $6.25 including sales tax if picked up at the museum office, 444 Pritham Avenue, Greenville Jct., or $7.95 mailed in the U.S. or Canada. Mail orders, with check or money order, should be sent to the Moosehead Historical Museum, P.O. Box 1116, Greenville, ME 04441-1116 (telephone 695-2909). Orders should be received by December 15 for Christmas delivery.
