Wednesday, December 06, 2006
DOVER-FOXCROFT - Edwin Treworgy of Milo was the recipient of the fourth annual Warren “Pete” Myrick Community Service Award, presented Dec. 4 at the annual meeting of the Piscataquis County Economic Development Council.

The Executive Committee of the PCEDC presents the Myrick Award each year to recognize a Piscataquis County citizen, business or organization who exemplifies Pete Myrick's concern for and commitment to education, economic development and/or civic leadership in the region.

Myrick, a Guilford resident who died in 2002, was a longtime educator in SAD 4 and a founder of the PCEDC, serving as the council's president in 2001.

Criteria considered in determining the award winner include the overall impact of the candidate's accomplishments, the duration of the candidate's engagement in community service activities, and the breadth of community involvement.

Treworgy was honored for a lifetime of service to the Milo community, spanning 45 years. Known foremost as an educator, he retired from Penquis Valley High School in 1990 following a 28-year career teaching English. He continued to return to school after retirement to provide after-school seminars and to mentor new teachers.

He served for 16 years on the Board of Trustees for the Little Red Schoolhouse in Dover-Foxcroft until its closing, and was elected to serve multiple terms on the Board of Directors for SAD 41 in Milo.

Treworgy has served as a member of the Milo Board of Selectmen and has been a dedicated member of Three Rivers Kiwanis Club for the past 10 years. When the Town Crier, Milo's community newspaper, closed its doors, Edwin and his wife, Ethelyn, launched the Kiwanis newsletter to help fill the communications void and keep the town informed and connected.

In 2001, Treworgy spearheaded the campaign to renovate the Milo Town Hall's Wingler Auditorium to create the Town Hall Arts Center, providing a local, community venue for performing and visual arts.

Also at the annual meeting, Dover-Foxcroft Town Manager Jack Clukey was elected PCEDC president for 2007. Other council officers and directors are Vice President Roger Merchant, Secretary Erik Stumpfel, Treasurer Linda Gilbert, Past President Scott Hersey, Robert Darling, Sophia Wilson, Jane Jones, John Simko, Gordon MacKinney, Ralph Gabarro, Steve Pound, Merlene Sanborn, Paul Sterns and Richard Carrier.
