By JONATHAN PRATT - GREENVILLE - The Maine Winter Sports Center's Healthy Hometowns Ski Program is once again being offered to all children in the Greenville area. This will mark the second year in a row that the Maine Winter Sports Center (MWSC) will work with area school officials. An informational meeting with Mike Yeo, MWSC Healthy Hometown Coordinator, was held Thursday, Dec. 6 in the Nickerson Elementary Library. While there, he was able to take measurements of students who had already expressed an interest in joining the program. Sign-up is ongoing, however, as Yeo will not be returning to the area until December 21, at which time the equipment will be handed out to participants. Since it's beginning in 1999, the Healthy Hometowns Ski Program has focused on accessibility, as they provide skis, trails located on school property, grooming equipment and a curriculum; sustainability, they have a professional staff and passionate communities dedicated to making a difference; creating a healthier environment for the children and their families. With an emphasis on personal accountability, the coaches are mentors and role models for all to follow. Over 70 communities are involved in the program, including 30 community trail systems spread out across the state. These programs are reaching thousands of Maine children each year. Participants at the Greenville school will be utilizing the school trails located behind the school buildings and playground. Yeo and others will be on hand on December 21 for a biathlon demonstration designed to peak the interest of students throughout the Greenville schools, and garner the interest of anyone who wishes to volunteer. Local volunteers have included Betsy Rockwell, Mary Lou Narbus, and student helper Sarah Lavigne. Students at Shirley Elementary will be included, as the incorporate the cross-country skiing program as part of their physical education curriculum. Cross Country Skis are available for rent for $45.00/season. Forms and information are available from Dawna Blackstone at 695-8921. Volunteers, students, home-schoolers, and parents invited to join.
